Some university students in Germany thought it would be funny to take the winning song from the German winner of Eurovision and make it into an unofficial World Cup anthem.  After posting their video on YouTube, it became an overnight success, bringing in over half a million views in under a week.  EMI, the company that owns the rights to the original composition, ordered [...] Read more »]]>

Some university students in Germany thought it would be funny to take the winning song from the German winner of Eurovision and make it into an unofficial World Cup anthem.  After posting their video on YouTube, it became an overnight success, bringing in over half a million views in under a week.  EMI, the company that owns the rights to the original composition, ordered the video be taken down, but that only created more publicity.  That is when Universal Music expressed interest in recording the song and the rights were cleared with EMI, and now the boys who made the parody received a recording contract.  Pretty crazy!

Monsta by Culcha Candela

Culcha Candela is a Dancehall group from Berlin, Germany, formed in 2001. Their lyrics range from political issues “Una Cosa” to party songs, such as “Partybus”. The name Culcha Candela can be translated into English roughly as “hot” or “bright” culture.

The band was formed in Berlin by founding members Johnny Strange, Itchyban, and Lafrotino. They were later joined by singers Larsito, Mr. Reedoo, Don Cali, and DJ Chino con Estilo.  The differing heritages of the band members allows for a mixture of lyrics in German, English, Spanish, and Patois.

Monsta is their new single off of their 4th album, “Schöne neue Welt” and the song has reached number 3 on the German charts.
